Genesis Medical Plastics has introduced its own brand of PEEK film and thin sheet for fabricating intricate components for implantable medical devices. The material is available in quantities suitable for project support and testing to full production.

The film and thin sheet and the PEEK resin from which they are made comply with ASTM F2026-17, the specification for PEEK polymers used in surgical implants. A contract manufacturer with extrusion, molding, and CNC machining expertise, Genesis is also certified to the ISO 13485:2016 standard for quality systems in medical manufacturing and is registered by FDA as a device manufacturing facility.

Implantable PEEK is typically processed by machining extruded rod and plate or by injection molding, according to Genesis Medical Plastics. To fill the need for implantable PEEK film and thin sheet for device components, Genesis engineered its own calendering technology. It now can provide PEEK film in sizes appropriate for laser-cutting or stamping small internal parts for defibrillators, pacemakers, and other bioelectronic devices.

"The decision to introduce Genesis PEEK film was driven by device manufacturers seeking a well-qualified commercial source,” said General Manager Stephen Kramer. “Customers also needed small size formats, rather than large rolls common in film production. This led us to develop technology to calender yield-efficient sizes for precision parts in quantities suited to customers' requirements."

Film and sheet is produced in 100 mm (4 in.) widths. Standard thicknesses range from 0.254 to 1.106 mm (0.010 to 0.040 in.). Custom slit widths and sizes are also available.

In addition to offering its new Genesis PEEK products, the company custom produces film and thin sheet for device manufacturers who prefer to supply their own implantable PEEK from Invibio, Evonik, or Solvay.
